Where the name comes from

The Pink Moon takes its name from the wild ground phlox that flowers in early spring — not the colour of the Moon, which is the commonest misunderstanding about any of these names.

These names reached English-language almanacs through a mix of Algonquian, Anglo-Saxon and colonial farming usage, and the attributions are looser than the tidy lists suggest — several months carry two or three competing names, and different nations and regions used different ones. Treat them as folk tradition with a real history rather than as a fixed system.

It follows the calendar, not the zodiac

What to expect when you look at it

A full moon is fully lit for practical purposes for about three nights, so the night either side of the exact date looks much the same. The best view is shortly after moonrise, when it is low and the illusion of size is strongest — an illusion, not an effect: the disc is the same angular width overhead.

If the table marks one of these as a supermoon, the disc is genuinely a few per cent wider and noticeably brighter, because the Moon is near the closest point of its orbit. The difference is real and considerably smaller than photographs suggest.
