Why the date moves

The lunar cycle is twenty-nine and a half days and the calendar month is thirty or thirty-one, so the full moon slips backward through the month by about a day each time and drops a whole month roughly every three years.

That mismatch is why every purely lunar calendar drifts against the seasons, why lunisolar calendars have to insert leap months to stop it, and why a full moon occasionally happens twice inside one calendar month.

The rhythm over a year

There are 13 full moons in the twelve months from today, which is the normal count — twelve or thirteen, depending on where the cycle happens to fall against the calendar. The gap between consecutive ones ranges from twenty-nine to thirty days, because the Moon's orbit is elliptical and its speed is not constant.

Over the same year they move through every sign of the zodiac, advancing by roughly one sign each time. That is the clearest way to see that the sign of a lunation is a consequence of the calendar rather than a chosen quality: it simply steps round the wheel.

How this date is worked out

A full moon is not a date somebody decided on. It is the instant when the Moon and the Sun reach a specific angular relationship — zero degrees apart for a new moon, a hundred and eighty for a full one — and that instant is computed from planetary positions.

Because it is an instant rather than a day, the calendar date depends on your time zone. A full moon at 01:00 UTC is on the previous evening in New York, which is why two sources sometimes give dates a day apart and both are right.
