What the card describes as a feeling

The emotional content is commitment understood as an institution. Someone reading here does not think of a relationship as a private arrangement between two people; they think of it as a thing with a shape that others can recognise, and they want yours to have that shape.

This can read as sincerity of a very solid kind. It can also read as someone more attached to the idea of the arrangement than to you specifically, and the card does not distinguish between those.

Upright

Upright the reading is respectful, conventional feeling. Loyalty, approval, a wish to make things formal. Where a spread is asking whether someone is serious, this card is usually taken as a yes with paperwork attached.

There is also a teaching flavour to it. Regard under this card often includes wanting to guide you, or wanting you to be guided by the same things they are, which some people receive as care and others as pressure.

Reversed

Reversed the convention is being rejected or has stopped fitting. One reading is a person feeling constrained by expectations, whose own family or community is the obstacle rather than their feeling. Another is going through the motions, where the form remains and the feeling behind it has gone.

A third handling is unorthodox attachment: real feeling that does not fit an approved shape, and a person unsure what to do about that.

Outside romance

For a colleague this is respect within a hierarchy, and often a wish to mentor. In a friendship it marks someone who values the friendship as an institution with duties in it, which is why they notice when you miss a birthday. In family readings it is frequently the relative for whom tradition and affection are the same thing, and who experiences a departure from custom as a personal rejection.

What a feelings position can and cannot tell you

Positions that ask what a person feels are a modern layer on the practice, not part of what the older manuals were doing. The card contributes a quality of feeling and nothing else; the identification of whose feeling it is comes from the reader.

So no card can tell you what a named person feels about you. You are handed a texture and you attach a face to it. Once that is treated as a finding rather than a prompt, the deck is doing the work of a conversation you have decided not to have.

Here the sensible use is to ask whether the form and the feeling are actually joined, in yourself as much as in the other person. That question does not need a card, but this card puts it well.
