What the card describes as a feeling
This is regard that has been organised. The feeling is not absent, it is subordinated: the person has decided how they will behave and behaves that way, and the emotion sits underneath the arrangement rather than on top of it.
To a person who reads warmth as expression, this can feel like being tolerated rather than wanted. To the person feeling it, showing up reliably is the declaration, and they may be puzzled that it was not received as one.
Upright
Upright the reading is stable commitment and a protective instinct. Attraction here is durable and slow. The person tends to think in terms of what they are willing to take responsibility for, which is a serious way of caring and a hard one to read from outside.
There is often a wish to provide a frame, sometimes one you did not ask for. That impulse is affectionate in its own terms even when it lands as being told what to do.
Reversed
Reversed the control loses its purpose. One reading is coldness or rigidity, feeling frozen into rules. Another is domination, where protection has slid into wanting authority over you and the affection has become a claim.
The third is a person whose structure has failed, feeling exposed and unable to admit it. Undemonstrative people in that state often go quiet rather than say so, which is easily mistaken for indifference.

For a colleague this is respect shown as trust with responsibility, rarely as praise. What a feelings position can and cannot tell you
Positional readings about feelings are a recent convention rather than an inherited one. The card describes a quality; the subject of that quality is assigned by the person doing the reading, and nothing in the deck confirms the assignment.
A card therefore cannot tell you what a specific person feels. It gives you a description to try on. When it is treated as a report on someone's interior, the reading has become a way of not asking, and tarot works badly as a substitute for a direct question.
