The correction comes first
Nothing in the astrological record locates a soulmate. There is no degree that signifies one, no aspect that announces one, and no classical author who attempts the trick. The word arrived from devotional and romantic writing and was fitted over astrology later, which is why it sits so loosely on it.
What survives the objection is narrower and more useful: a comparison of two charts can describe where two people find each other restful, where they abrade, and which argument they will keep having. Taurus, being fixed, tends to have very few recurring arguments and to hold each of them for a long time.
Venus, not the sun
Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Venus governs what a person finds pleasant, what they are willing to pay for and how they show fondness. The whole Taurus reputation for steadiness is really a Venus story told in the earth element: value accumulated slowly and then defended.
The trouble with the traditional shortlist is that it never checks where Venus actually fell. Venus never strays more than about forty-eight degrees from the sun, so a Taurus sun carries Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and those four are wildly different in what they call affection. Where the names on the list came from
Virgo and Capricorn are the other earth signs, standing a third of the wheel away in either direction. Cancer and Pisces are water, a sixth of the wheel off, and water is held to nourish earth. Both spacings were classified as favourable long before anyone applied them to couples.
Read as a piece of reasoning, that is a definition doing the work of a discovery. The angle was called harmonious; therefore the signs at that angle are called compatible. No observation of actual Taurus partnerships enters anywhere.
What a two-chart reading weighs instead
The sun is a single body among the dozen a chart records. A serious comparison looks at both Moons for what each person needs when nobody is watching, both Venus placements for the currency of affection, both Mars placements for how a disagreement moves, and both ascendants for what each person shows on arrival.
