Where the three names come from

Aquarius lies directly across the wheel from Leo at 180 degrees. Scorpio and Taurus lie 90 degrees away on either side. Nothing else forms a hard angle to Leo, so the difficult list has three entries and always the same three.

Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus are also the four fixed signs, sitting in the settled middle of their seasons. Whatever else is claimed about these pairings, the mechanical fact underneath them is that none of the four is built to reverse a position quickly.

The Sun against Saturn

Leo is ruled by the Sun and Aquarius, in the classical scheme, by Saturn.
