Where the Dragon year really starts
The Chinese year opens at the second new moon after the December solstice, which puts new year's day between 21 January and 20 February and moves it every year. The Dragon years give the clearest examples: 1988 began on 17 February, 2000 on 5 February, 2012 on 23 January and 2024 on 10 February.
A calculator that cuts the year at 1 January will therefore call six or seven weeks of Rabbit births Dragon births. That is roughly one birthday in eight given the wrong animal. The stock example is 1 February 1988. By a Gregorian table that person is a Dragon; by the calendar the tradition actually uses they are a Rabbit, since the Dragon year did not begin until 17 February. The check on this page computes the boundary for your birth year, so a February birthday gets a real answer rather than a guess.
Late January and February birthdays are the only ones that need this care. A birth in June or September sits well inside a single Chinese year and the two calendars agree on the animal.
Dragon years and the element attached
Dragon years come round every twelve years: 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024, with 2036 next. Each runs from its new year date to the day before the next new year, so it always covers parts of two Gregorian years.
A cycle of five elements runs underneath, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, each holding two consecutive years. The animal cycle of twelve and the element cycle of ten only line up again after sixty years, which is why a Wood Dragon comes round once in a long lifetime. 2024 was a Wood Dragon year; 2012 was a Water Dragon.
The element is part of the year's name in ordinary use, and dropping it loses half the label.
Polarity, the race and the reading
The Dragon is a yang animal. It could fly, so the Great Race should have been no contest, and the legend explains fifth place by saying the Dragon stopped to bring rain to a village along the way and then paused again to help the Rabbit reach the bank.
The traditional reading takes that as authority used generously and attention spent on the wrong things. The Dragon is described as confident, direct and unbothered by other people's approval, and in the same breath as demanding, impatient with detail and poor at accepting correction. Birth rates in East Asia do rise in Dragon years, which is a real measurable effect of the belief rather than evidence for it.
Because the label attaches to a whole year, the tradition is describing a cohort of births rather than an individual. That is a weaker claim than most English summaries make of it, and it is worth keeping in view while reading any of the character material.
Trines, the opposite, and western astrology
The animals fall into four trines of three spaced four apart. The Dragon shares its trine with the Rat and the Monkey, a group the tradition reads as quick, ambitious and comfortable with risk. Six places away sits the Dog, the Dragon's opposite, a pairing read as principle against scale.
None of this overlaps with western astrology. The animal is fixed by the year in a lunisolar calendar; a western Sun sign is fixed by the date within a solar year. They use different clocks and make different claims, so there is nothing to reconcile between a Dragon year and a Scorpio Sun. They are two labels, not one answer arrived at twice.
