The simplest system there is
Whichever sign holds your ascendant becomes the entire first house. The next sign is the second house, the one after that the third, and so on around the wheel.
Every house is exactly thirty degrees. There are no uneven divisions, no interceptions, and no latitude at which the system breaks down. It is the only house system with no failure mode.
The oldest, and recently the newest
Whole sign houses are what Hellenistic astrologers used, and they remained standard in the Indian tradition without interruption. In the West they were displaced by quadrant systems and largely forgotten by the twentieth century.
They returned in the 1980s and 1990s, when translations of Hellenistic sources made it clear that most of the surviving classical material assumes them. A great deal of traditional technique only works properly in whole sign, which is the main argument for using it.
What changes when you switch
Two things, and the second surprises people.
The first is that bodies move house. A planet in the same sign as your ascendant is in the first house here even if it sits well above the horizon, which a quadrant system would place in the twelfth.
The second is that the Midheaven floats. In Placidus the Midheaven is the tenth cusp by definition. In whole sign it lands wherever geometry puts it, most often in the ninth, tenth or eleventh house.

That is not a technicality. A whole sign chart with the Midheaven in the ninth offers a reading that is simply unavailable in a Placidus chart of the same birth, and it is one of the clearer arguments for casting both.
No interceptions, ever
Because every house is exactly one sign, no sign can be swallowed inside a house and no sign can appear on two cusps. Interceptions and duplicated signs are artefacts of uneven division, and whole sign has none.
Practitioners who find interceptions unconvincing tend to cite this as the decisive point. Those who find them meaningful consider it a loss of information. Both positions are held by serious people.
It still needs a birth time
This trips people up, because the system looks like it should not. The houses are decided by which sign holds the ascendant, and the ascendant still moves through the whole zodiac every day.
What whole sign is forgiving about is precision. A birth time an hour out will usually not change which sign is rising, whereas in Placidus it moves every cusp by fifteen degrees. If your birth time is approximate, whole sign gives you a more stable chart.
When to use it
Use it if you are reading Hellenistic or traditional material, if you are comparing with a Vedic chart, or if your birth time is uncertain enough that quadrant cusps are guesswork.
Use Placidus if you are reading modern Western interpretations, most of which assume it. Cast both if you want to know how much of your reading depends on the choice, which the comparison table in your result answers directly.
